Why should I defrag my hard disk?

If your PC is slow, you should defrag your hard disk. This can improve the speed and performance of your PC as well as its hardware longevity.

Defrag deals with correcting the fragmentation of your files. The hard drive is the physical piece of hardware your files is saved on. When your PC saves files, it puts them where there is space. Often files are broken up into pieces. For example, when you recall a file and work on it, it often does not fit back in the same physical location. Your PC divides up the file, sometimes into several pieces, and saves it where it can.

Why defrag?

Fragmentation causes problems that doing a defrag can correct. In general, defragging optimizes your PC's memory. Fragmented files slow down your computer because it needs more resources and time to find and recall these files. Applications can also take longer to load. The heads that read files can get stressed and worn out if you have a fragmented hard disk. Defragging can extend the life of your hardware. A defragged hard disk can also increase your chances of recovering lost data.

Once fragmentation starts, it can spread quickly – requiring defragging. If a computer becomes fragmented and more files are saved and deleted, there will be more fragmentation.

How does defragging work?

If a file is fragmented, it is like the pages of a book are separated and hidden in various places around a house. If you defrag, it is like the pages of the book being brought back together. Defragging finds all of the pieces of a file and puts them in contiguous, physical locations.

How do you defrag?

To defrag your hard drive, you need to use a computer program or utility. There are many defragging tools available. SpeedyPC Pro, a complete suite of optimization and cleaning tools, can defragment your PC.

Before you defrag, it is best to analyze your hard disk. This analysis discovers how much of the disk is fragmented and if a defrag is needed. If it is determined that you should defrag your PC to improve performance, you just let the program do the work.

In order to defrag a drive, your PC will require free disk space. For example, SpeedyPC Pro requires 15 per cent free disk space to defrag your drive.

When should you defrag?

Defragging can take some time. How long depends on many factors, including the system resources available, the disk volume, the number of files, and how fragmented the files are. It is a good idea to defrag when you do not need to use your computer or it is not doing other tasks. For example, night can be a good time to defrag. Be sure to close out of resource-intensive applications, such as your anti-virus scanner, before you defrag.
